Collage Creative Portfolio

When to use

  • You're a designer, illustrator, photographer, or art director whose portfolio looks flat in a standard grid
  • You have mixed media — photos, scans, sketches, posters, video stills — and want one site that holds them all
  • Your work is bold and tactile, but your current portfolio site feels like a generic template
  • You're applying for creative roles and need a portfolio that shows taste, not just thumbnails
  • You want a single-page portfolio you can build and update in an afternoon, without a CMS
  • Your pieces tell a story together — a collage layout lets you show relationships, not just a list

Workflow

  1. Gather the raw material (input: your finished work + process scraps → output: asset pool)
Collect 12–20 pieces: finished work first, then the scraps that make a collage feel alive — sketches, close-up crops, texture photos, handwritten notes, screenshots of works in progress. Export everything at consistent quality (at least 1600px on the long edge for hero pieces), name files descriptively, and note the year and medium for each. A collage portfolio lives or dies on its raw material — thin assets mean a thin page.
  2. Define the collage language (input: asset pool → output: style rules)
Pick the rules before placing anything: 2–3 background tones (one light, one dark, one accent), one display typeface and one body typeface, and a layering vocabulary — torn edges vs. clean cuts, rotation range (±3° for a subtle feel, ±8° for chaos), and how much overlap is allowed. Write these down as five short rules. Without rules, a collage becomes clutter; with them, it reads as deliberate.
  3. Sequence the story (input: asset pool + style rules → output: ordered project list)
Order your pieces like a gallery walk, not a chronological dump: strongest piece first, a quieter second piece for breathing room, then alternating scale and mood. Group related pieces into clusters of 2–4 so the page reads as chapters. Cut anything that duplicates a neighbour — a collage with 8 strong pieces beats one with 20 forgettable ones. Note one sentence per piece explaining what it proves about you.
  4. Build the hero collage (input: top 3–5 pieces + style rules → output: hero section)
The hero is a layered composition, not a slideshow: one anchor image (large, sharp), one or two supporting fragments overlapping its edges, your name in large display type, and a one-line statement of what you do. Keep the top-left or centre clear for the name — the eye should land on you first, then wander into the work. Test it at phone width: if the layers collapse into mush, reduce the overlap and enlarge the anchor.
