Ecommerce Seller Skills Kit
When to use
- You run an online store and the work never ends: listings to fix, photos to redo, messages to answer, prices to check
- Your listings get views but not orders, and you suspect the photos, the title, or the description — but not which one
- You are not sure what you actually earn per order once fees, shipping, and returns are counted
- Support messages eat your evenings, and half of them are the same five questions
- Most customers buy once and never come back, and you have no system for bringing them back
Workflow
- Audit the storefront (input: store URL → output: audit list)
Walk the store as a first-time buyer: search for a product the way a customer would, open the top five listings, read them on a phone, add one to the cart, and start checkout. Write down everything that confuses, slows, or worries you — missing measurements, blurry photos, shipping cost revealed too late, no return policy in sight. The audit list is ordered by what costs orders first, not by what is easiest to fix. - Rewrite one listing properly (input: audit list → output: rewritten listing)
Pick the listing with the most views and the fewest orders, and rebuild it completely: a title that says what it is, who it is for, and the key detail (size, material, quantity); photos that answer the buyer's questions in order — what it is, how big it is, what it looks like up close, what it looks like in use, what is in the box; and a description that leads with the outcome, then the facts (dimensions, materials, care, shipping, returns). One listing done properly is the template for the rest — do not rewrite twenty listings badly before you have rewritten one well. - Price with margin math (input: listing + costs → output: price card)
For each product, write the price card: selling price, minus product cost, minus platform and payment fees, minus shipping you absorb, minus expected returns, equals what you actually keep per order. Price from the card, not from competitors: a competitor's price tells you nothing about their costs. If the card says a product loses money at the market price, the answer is to change the product, the bundle, or the channel — not to hope volume fixes arithmetic. - Answer support in one touch (input: inbox → output: answered messages + FAQ updates)
Sort the inbox into the five questions that repeat, and write one good answer for each — the answer, the link, and the next step, in the customer's words, not yours. Answer each new message in one touch: everything the customer needs to act, no "we'll get back to you." Every message that needs a second round is a gap in the answer; fix the answer, and when the same question arrives a third time, put the answer on the listing and in the FAQ so it stops arriving at all. - Turn one order into a repeat order (input: recent orders → output: retention plan)
The cheapest order is the second one. Build the retention plan around what a buyer needs after delivery: a thank-you with clear care instructions, a check-in once they have had time to use the product, and one honest reason to come back — a refill, a companion product, a bundle for the next occasion. No tricks, no fake urgency: the repeat buyer comes back because the first order went well and the second one is easy. - Run the weekly ops review (input: week's listings, prices, support, orders → output: next week's fix list)
Once a week, one hour: which listing improved, which price card changed, which support question is still repeating, how many buyers came back. Pick the single fix that would move the most orders next week and do it first on Monday. A store improves one fix a week — the stores that try to fix everything on Sunday fix nothing by Friday.
