Golden Market Deck

When to use

  • You are pitching a marketplace, exchange, trading platform, or market-infrastructure business to investors
  • A partner deck needs to explain why this market, why now, and why you — in under 15 slides
  • Your current deck buries the business model on slide 14 and the ask never appears
  • You have real market figures but they are scattered across spreadsheets, notes, and a pitch you improvised
  • You need a deck that still argues its case when forwarded as a PDF with no presenter

Workflow

  1. Assemble the evidence (input: your notes, spreadsheets, and sources → output: evidence sheet)
Gather the raw material before any slide exists: market size figures with their sources and dates, the specific problem as named by real users or counterparties, your product's actual capabilities today, pricing and unit economics as they stand, and anything real that counts as traction (users, volume, revenue, signed partners). Every figure gets a source, a date, and a definition — "the market is huge" is not evidence, and a number without a source is a liability in a Q&A.
  2. Set the argument spine (input: evidence sheet → output: one-line-per-slide outline)
Write the deck as one sentence per slide before designing anything: market shift → problem → solution → product → business model → go-to-market → competition → traction → team → ask. Each sentence must follow from the previous one; if a slide cannot be summarized in one sentence, it is two slides or none. Cut anything that does not move the argument toward the ask — a marketplace deck earns its length by logic, not by volume.
  3. Design the gold system (input: outline → output: visual system + master slides)
Build a disciplined gold-on-charcoal system: deep charcoal backgrounds, one warm gold for the key figure or headline word on each slide, silver-grey for supporting text, generous margins. One takeaway headline per slide, set large; one chart or table at most per slide; gold is reserved for the number the audience must remember. A slide that needs three colors and two charts is a slide that needs to be split.
  4. Write the proof slides (input: evidence sheet + visual system → output: market, model, traction slides)
The three slides investors actually read get the most care. Market: show the sizing as a simple stack (total → serviceable → obtainable) with each layer sourced and dated. Business model: show how one transaction makes money, step by step, with the fee or spread stated plainly. Traction: show what has actually happened, in a chart or table with dates — never a projection presented as traction, and never a projection without its assumptions labeled as assumptions.
  5. Close with the ask and rehearse the Q&A (input: full draft → output: final deck + Q&A sheet)
The ask slide states exactly what you want (amount, instrument, timeline, what it funds) in one slide — no coy "join us on the journey." Then list the five hardest questions a skeptical reader would ask, and answer each in one paragraph with evidence: competition, regulation, chicken-and-egg supply/demand, defensibility, and what breaks first. Add speaker notes to every slide so the PDF forwards cleanly, and read the whole deck once with no narration — it must argue its case alone.
