Editable Visual Deck

Editable Visual Deck

When to use

  • Your decks keep coming back as flat images or PDFs that nobody can edit without rebuilding from scratch
  • You need a deck that a teammate can update (swap numbers, change a chart, fix a typo) without design skills
  • You are building a template deck — sales, pitch, lesson, report — that many people will reuse with different content
  • Your current deck looks good on slide one and falls apart by slide ten because every slide was built by hand
  • You want visuals (diagrams, charts, icons) that stay crisp and changeable instead of screenshots pasted onto slides

Workflow

  1. Define the story and the slide count (input: topic + audience → output: deck outline)
Write the deck's one-sentence story, then outline one slide per idea — title, problem, evidence, solution, proof, ask is a solid spine for most decks. Cap the outline at 12 slides for a talk and 20 for a read-alone deck. If two slides say the same thing, merge them. A deck outline fits on one page; if it doesn't, the story isn't settled yet.
  2. Build the master layouts (input: deck outline → output: master set)
Build 4–6 master layouts before any content: title, section divider, one-column text, two-column, full-bleed visual, and chart/diagram. Each master fixes the fonts, colors, margins, and where the footer sits. Every slide in the deck uses a master — no hand-positioned text boxes. This is the whole secret of editability: change a master once, and every slide using it updates.
  3. Fill the slides with editable visuals (input: master set → output: drafted deck)
Write the content into the masters using native, editable elements: real text boxes (not text baked into images), charts built from the slide tool's chart feature (not chart screenshots), diagrams drawn with the tool's shapes and connectors, and icons from a vector icon set. Every number in a chart must come from an editable data table behind it. If a visual can't be edited inside the deck, it doesn't belong in the deck.
  4. Add speaker notes and check the read-alone version (input: drafted deck → output: finished deck)
Write speaker notes for every slide: what to say, in plain sentences, plus any number or source the presenter might be asked about. Then read the deck with notes hidden — it must still make sense to someone reading it alone. If a slide only works when someone talks over it, add the missing sentence to the slide.
  5. Hand over with an edit guide (input: finished deck → output: deck + edit guide)
Deliver the deck in its native editable format (not just a PDF), plus a one-page edit guide: how to change the title, swap a chart's numbers, replace an image, and add a slide from a master. Test the guide by handing the deck to someone who didn't build it and asking them to change one number and one headline. If they can't, the deck isn't editable enough yet.
