Creative Previsualization Skills

Creative Previsualization Skills

When to use

  • You have a script or concept and the director, cinematographer, and producer each picture a different film
  • A client or funder needs to see what you intend before approving a budget
  • Your shot list was written without ever visualizing the scene, and the shoot day keeps running over
  • Storyboards exist but nobody updated them after the last script revision
  • You need to test pacing, camera movement, and coverage before spending a day on set

Workflow

  1. Scope the kit (input: script or concept + production scale → output: kit inventory)
Define the project before building anything: format (short, feature, commercial, animation), length, number of locations, and the decisions pre-viz must settle (look, coverage, pacing, or all three). The default kit: moodboard, storyboard, animatic, shot list, and look test. A two-minute commercial may need only moodboard and shot list; a feature needs all five. Cut skills the production will not actually use — an unmaintained storyboard is worse than none, because the crew will follow the stale one.
  2. Lock the visual spine (input: script + references → output: visual spine)
Distill the project's look into a spine before any skill is built: tone in one line, visual references with what each one contributes (not just "like this film"), color and light direction, camera language (static vs. moving, lens feel), and the look of each key location and character. Every reference names what to take from it — "the night-market scene's sodium lighting" — never a vague mood. The spine is the single source of truth every kit skill draws from.
  3. Build the skills in production order (input: visual spine + script → output: five working skills)
Build in the order the work actually flows: moodboard first (collects the look), then storyboard (draws the key frames per scene), then animatic (boards timed to sound, revealing pacing problems), then shot list (every setup the animatic implies, with lens, movement, and coverage), then look test (a single finished frame or short test that proves the look is achievable). Each skill gets its own prompt, its own input checklist, and its own output format — the kit is a set of tools, not one mega-prompt.
  4. Apply the quality bar (input: five draft skills → output: kit that passes every gate)
Run each skill against the same bar before the kit ships: every board traces to a script beat — no orphan frames, no missing beats; the animatic's runtime matches the script's intended duration within a stated tolerance; the shot list covers every board, and every board appears in the animatic; the look test matches the moodboard's stated palette and light; and a crew member who was not in the room can read the shot list and set up the day. A kit that fails any gate goes back to the skill that failed.
  5. Compose the pre-viz workflow (input: passing kit → output: script-to-shoot sequence)
Wire the skills into the order a real production runs: moodboard settles the look conversation, boards visualize each scene, animatic tests pacing and reveals where the story drags, shot list turns the animatic into a shootable plan, look test proves the plan before the shoot day. Define the handoffs: script revisions flow into boards first, boards into the animatic, animatic into the shot list — never patch the shot list while the boards still show the old version.
  6. Maintain the kit (input: script revisions, location changes, budget cuts → output: updated spine and skills)
Every script revision triggers the same update pass: spine first (does the look change?), then affected boards, then animatic re-timing, then shot list. Version every output with the script draft number it matches. Retire boards that no longer match the script — a crew following a board from three drafts ago is shooting the wrong film.
