Language App OG Image
When to use
- Your language app's link previews show a generic logo or a screenshot nobody can read at thumbnail size
- You are announcing a new language, course, or feature and want the preview to say which language it is for instantly
- Your current OG image was built for a desktop banner and turns into mush when shared in chats and feeds
- You need one preview template that works for every language you offer, just by swapping the language cue
- You want previews that feel friendly and encouraging — the tone language learners respond to — without cartoon mascots borrowed from anyone else
Workflow
- Decide the one message (input: app facts → output: message line)
Pick the single thing the image must say: the app name plus the language (or "Learn a new language" if it's a general announcement) plus who it's for ("for travelers", "for beginners", "for kids" — one audience only). One message, seen for under a second. If it needs a paragraph, it's two messages; pick the stronger one. - Choose the language cue (input: message line → output: language cue)
Pick one visual cue that says the language without words: the target language's script written large (one or two characters), a speech bubble with a greeting, or a small flag-free cue like a landmark silhouette or a book in that language's script. Avoid flags as the only cue — many languages span many countries, and a flag can say the wrong thing. The cue must be recognizable at thumbnail size: one big script character beats a paragraph of example sentences. - Sketch the composition (input: language cue → output: layout sketch)
Lay out the 1200×630 canvas in three zones: app mark or wordmark on the left, one short headline in the middle ("Learn Japanese for travel", "Spanish in 10 minutes a day"), and the language cue on the right. Keep the headline to 6 words or fewer, keep 40 pixels clear at every edge (platforms crop differently), and keep the whole composition readable when shrunk to the width of a thumb. - Set the type and color (input: layout sketch → output: typeset image)
Set the app name in your brand font at a size that stays readable at 240 pixels wide, and the headline one step smaller. Use your app's real brand colors with one accent at most, and high contrast: dark text on a light field or light text on a dark field. Left-align the text. If the target language uses a non-Latin script, check that the script renders in a real font at preview size — a missing-glyph box in a preview is worse than no script at all. - Export and test the preview (input: typeset image → output: verified OG image)
Export as a 1200×630 JPEG or PNG under 1 MB, then paste your link into at least two chat apps and one social feed and look at the actual preview. Check: is the language cue recognizable, is the headline intact, is nothing cropped, does the image still look like your app. Fix what you find and re-test — preview caches are sticky, so append a version query (like?v=2) to the image URL when you replace it.
