Playful Primary Classroom Deck

When to use

  • You are a teacher planning a lesson for 6–11 year olds and your slides are currently a wall of bullet points in 12-point type
  • You need a deck for a single lesson — a concept, a story, a practice round, and a wrap-up — that holds young attention for 30–45 minutes
  • You want slides that work when projected in a bright classroom, read from the back row, and survive being printed as handouts
  • You are a parent, tutor, or student teacher building a deck for a class, club, or workshop with young kids
  • Your lesson has an activity (sorting, matching, drawing, voting) and you need slides that run the activity, not just describe it

Workflow

  1. State the lesson in one line (input: topic + age group → output: lesson goal + success check)
Write what students will be able to do by the end, in words a child could understand: "By the end, you can sort animals into groups by how they move." Add one success check you can see or hear (hands up, a sorted pile, a shouted answer). Name the age group and the time available — a 20-minute Year 2 lesson and a 45-minute Year 5 lesson are different decks, not different fonts. If the goal needs "and" twice, it is two lessons; split it now or the deck will try to teach both and land neither.
  2. Plan the lesson arc (input: lesson goal → output: slide-by-slide arc)
Structure the deck as a story: Hook (1 slide, a question or a mystery), Discover (3–5 slides, the idea in small steps), Try it (2–4 slides, guided practice), Play (2–3 slides, the activity), Show what you know (1–2 slides, the check), Cheer (1 slide, recap + celebration). Assign each slide one job and write its single idea in a plain sentence before designing anything. A deck for young kids should run 10–16 slides for a full lesson; more than that and the teacher is clicking, not teaching.
  3. Design for the back row (input: arc → output: visual rules + slide drafts)
Set the rules: type never smaller than 28pt for body and 44pt+ for titles, one idea per slide, one picture per slide, high-contrast colors, no more than 8 words on a title and 15 on any slide. Use big friendly shapes, chunky icons, and a consistent mascot or color cue for each section (a star for Try it, a rocket for Play) so kids can tell where they are without reading. Draft every slide against the rules — a slide that breaks them gets redesigned, not excused.
  4. Build the activity slides (input: arc + activity plan → output: runnable activity slides)
Turn the activity into slides that run themselves: a "Your turn" slide with the task in three short steps, a worked-example slide showing one completed answer, a timer or countdown slide, and a "Share" slide with the prompt for showing answers ("Hold up your card!", "Tell your partner!"). Write the teacher's line on each slide in the speaker notes — the exact words to say — so a substitute teacher could run the lesson from the deck alone. Test the activity mentally with the slowest plausible group: if they cannot finish in the time shown, simplify the task, not the timer.
  5. Check, print, and rehearse (input: full deck → output: checked deck + handout + rehearsal notes)
Run the checks: read every slide from three meters away (or zoomed out), confirm every image is described in alt text or notes for accessibility, confirm no slide depends on color alone (add labels or shapes), and confirm names, facts, and any quoted material are correct. Export a handout version (2–4 slides per page, with space to draw or write) and rehearse the deck once out loud, clicking through, to catch timing, typos, and slides that need a teacher line you forgot. Fix what the rehearsal finds — a deck rehearsed once teaches twice as well as a deck merely finished.
