Mono Designer Portfolio
When to use
- You are a designer whose work is colorful, and your portfolio site keeps competing with the projects it shows
- You need a portfolio site for job applications, freelance clients, or a studio relaunch
- Your current portfolio is a grid of images with no story — visitors admire it and leave without contacting you
- You want a site you can update in an evening when a project ships
- You have 4–8 strong projects and need to pick an order that sells you, not just shows you
Workflow
- Pick the projects (input: your full body of work → output: 4–8 selected projects)
Choose projects by the story they tell together, not by how pretty they are: one that shows craft, one that shows range, one that shows impact (a number — sales, sign-ups, time saved), and one that shows how you think under constraints. Cut anything you can't explain in two sentences. Four strong projects beat ten forgettable ones. - Write the case studies (input: selected projects → output: one case study per project)
Each case study follows the same shape: context (client, goal, constraints — 2 sentences), what you did (decisions, not deliverables — why this layout, why this type, what you rejected), outcome (a number or a concrete result), and your role (what was yours vs. the team's). Keep each case study under 200 words. Process shots — sketches, drafts, rejected directions — count for more than a third beauty shot. - Build the monochrome frame (input: case studies → output: site structure)
The site is deliberately monochrome: off-white background, near-black text, hairline rules, one typeface family. No color anywhere in the chrome — the only color on the page comes from the project images themselves. Structure: home (name, one-line positioning, project index), project pages (case study + images), about (photo, background, what you're looking for), contact (one clear way to reach you). - Write the positioning line (input: your work + who you want to reach → output: one-line intro)
The home page opens with one line that says what you do and for whom: "Product designer for fintech startups" beats "I design delightful experiences". Follow it with the project index — project name, client, year, one-line outcome — no decorative intro paragraphs. Visitors decide in seconds whether your work is relevant; the line's job is to help them decide fast. - Ship and maintain (input: finished site → output: live portfolio)
Publish with what you have — a live portfolio with four projects beats a perfect one that never ships. Check it on a phone (most clients open portfolio links on mobile), make sure every image loads fast, and put the contact link on every page. After launch, update rule: when a project ships, add it within a week or it never gets added.
