Inclusive Cutpaper Deck
When to use
- Your deck will be presented to a mixed audience and you need every slide readable — including by people with low vision or color blindness
- Your slides currently rely on color alone to carry meaning (red = bad, green = good) and you want a design that doesn't exclude anyone
- You want a deck with a handmade, tactile feel — torn paper, layered shapes, bold cutouts — without sacrificing legibility
- You are preparing a talk, lesson, or pitch that will be shared as a PDF or viewed on a phone, where small text dies
- Your template's body text is under 18pt and your charts are only distinguishable by hue
Workflow
- Set the accessibility floor (input: audience + delivery format → output: accessibility rules)
Fix the non-negotiables before any decoration: minimum body text 20pt (24pt preferred), minimum contrast ratio 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text and shapes, and no meaning carried by color alone — every color cue gets a label, icon, or pattern as well. Decide the delivery formats up front (projected, printed, PDF on a phone) because each one changes how small a detail can safely be. These rules are constraints the design works inside, not polish applied at the end. - Choose the cut-paper palette (input: accessibility rules → output: palette + texture set)
Pick a palette of 4–6 paper tones that pass the contrast rules against each other: a warm off-white base, one dark ink tone, and two or three mid-tones with clearly different lightness values (so they stay distinct in grayscale and for color-blind viewers). Define the paper textures: torn edges, layered overlaps, and a subtle grain — all decorative, never structural. Every shape that carries meaning uses a distinct lightness or pattern, never hue alone. - Build the slide masters (input: palette + texture set → output: master slides)
Create masters for the five slide jobs every deck needs: title, section divider, one-idea statement, content (bullets or steps), and data (chart or table). Each master has a fixed, generous text zone — headline at the top in the largest size, one idea per slide, and a cut-paper motif (a torn strip, a layered corner, a bold shape) that frames the content without crowding it. The masters lock the type scale and margins so individual slides can't drift into tiny text. - Lay out the content (input: your draft content + masters → output: full slide draft)
Pour the content into the masters, one idea per slide, cutting ruthlessly: a slide with six bullets becomes two slides with three, or one slide with a diagram. Charts get direct labels on every series, patterns or shapes that distinguish series, and a plain-language takeaway line under the chart. Images get alt text and a caption that states what the viewer should notice. If a slide needs a footnote to be understood, the slide is doing too much — split it. - Check the deck without color (input: full slide draft → output: verified deck)
Review every slide in grayscale: if any meaning disappears, fix it with a label, icon, or pattern. Then check it at phone size (the PDF test) and at arm's length (the projection test): if the smallest text isn't readable in both, enlarge it or cut it. Finally, read the deck aloud in order — the cut-paper style should feel warm and human, and the spoken flow should match the slide flow with no slide that only makes sense if you were in the room.
