Image Narrative Deck

When to use

  • Your deck is mostly bullet points and audiences stop reading after slide three
  • You need to pitch, brief, or teach something where the story matters more than the data dump
  • A talk, keynote, or investor pitch needs slides that support the speaker instead of competing with them
  • You have strong photos, diagrams, or product images and want the deck built around them
  • You are turning a report or essay into a deck and want it to feel like a narrative, not a document

Workflow

  1. Find the story arc (input: topic + audience → output: one-line story + 3-act spine)
    Before any slide, write the story in one line: who it is about, what changes, and why it matters. Then split it into three acts — setup (the world as it is), tension (the problem or opportunity), resolution (what happens if we act). Every slide must belong to one act; a slide that belongs to none gets cut. If the material is a report, the "story" is the argument: what was true, what changed, what we should do.
  2. Assign one point per slide (input: story spine → output: slide list)
    Turn the spine into a slide list where each slide makes exactly one point, stated as a full sentence in the slide's headline ("Demand doubled after the price cut" — not "Results"). Aim for 10–15 slides for a 15-minute talk; more slides than that usually means the story is carrying filler. For each slide, note the one image that could carry the point — a photo, a diagram, a screenshot, a single chart — and mark any slide where no image comes to mind: that slide's point is probably not visual yet and needs rethinking, not a decorative stock photo.
  3. Pair each image with minimal words (input: slide list → output: slide drafts)
    Build each slide as image-first: the image takes most of the frame, the headline states the point, and at most three short supporting lines sit in a quiet corner — fewer is better. Captions should say what to notice in the image ("the gap on the right is the market we missed"), not repeat the headline. Numbers appear as one big figure with a label, never as a table pasted onto a slide. If a slide needs a paragraph to be understood, the point belongs in a handout, not on screen.
  4. Build the transitions (input: slide drafts → output: ordered deck)
    Order the slides so each one answers the question the previous slide raised — that is what makes a deck feel like a narrative instead of a list. Check the seams: the last line of one slide should set up the next slide's image. Add act dividers only if the talk is long (20+ minutes); for short decks, a divider slide is a speed bump. Rehearse the deck in order, out loud, and cut any slide you find yourself apologizing for ("this one's a bit busy, but...").
  5. Polish for the room (input: ordered deck → output: presentation-ready deck)
    Final pass: check every image at full-screen size for resolution and cropping, confirm text is readable from the back of the room (headlines large, supporting lines never below 18pt at full-screen), and confirm the deck works with the projector's color and contrast. Export a PDF handout version with speaker notes for anyone who wants the detail — the slides stay clean, the detail lives in the handout. Test the deck on the actual machine and projector if you can; fonts and colors shift between screens.

Image Narrative Deck — Build Template

Images carry the story; words stay in supporting roles. One point per slide.

Story arc

One-line story (who, what changes, why it matters): {sentence}

Cut rule: any slide that belongs to no act gets cut.

Slide list (10–15 slides for a 15-minute talk; one point per slide)

No-image check: any slide where no image comes to mind → rethink the point, do NOT add a decorative stock photo.

Slide drafts (image-first)

Per slide:

  • Image: {file} — takes most of the frame
  • Headline: {the point, full sentence}
  • Caption: {what to notice in the image — e.g. "The jump starts the week of the cut."}
