Pain-Gag Reveal Launch Film

Pain-Gag Reveal Launch Film
When to use
- You're launching a product and every launch video you draft sounds like every other launch video
- You have 60 seconds to make strangers remember a product they've never heard of
- Your product solves an annoying everyday problem that everyone recognizes instantly
- You want a launch film for social feeds, where the first two seconds decide whether anyone keeps watching
- Your brand can carry a joke — the product's personality allows humor without undermining trust
Workflow
- Pick one pain (input: product + audience → output: pain statement)
Choose the single most recognizable annoyance your product removes — the one your audience would describe in their own words without prompting. Write it as a scene, not a claim: "It's 11pm and you're still copying invoice numbers into a spreadsheet" beats "Invoicing is inefficient." One pain only: a film that lists three pains has no time to land any of them, and the gag needs a single setup to pay off. If the pain needs explaining, it's the wrong pain — the audience should recognize it in the first two seconds. - Write the gag (input: pain statement → output: gag beat)
Build one comedic beat that exaggerates the pain to absurdity: the spreadsheet grows arms, the invoice pile buries the desk, the founder dramatically reads the world's dullest error message. The gag must be aimed at the pain, never at the customer — the audience laughs with the person in the film, not at them. Keep it visual and wordless where possible: a physical gag plays in every language and survives being watched on mute, which is how most feed videos are first seen. Test the gag by describing it in one sentence to someone outside the team — if they don't smile, it isn't a gag yet. - Stage the reveal (input: gag beat → output: reveal beat)
Design the moment the product enters as the answer to the gag: the pile of invoices vanishes with one click, the spreadsheet closes itself, the buried desk reappears clean. The reveal must be the punchline's resolution — the product does, on screen, the thing the gag said was impossible. Show the product working, not a logo: the viewer should understand what the product does from the reveal shot alone, with no voiceover. If the reveal needs a narrator to explain what just happened, the reveal isn't visual enough — restage it until the action tells the story. - Script shot by shot (input: reveal beat → output: full script)
Write the film as a shot list, not a paragraph: each shot gets a duration (in seconds), a visual description, the on-screen text, and the audio (music, sound effect, or line of dialogue). Structure the timing: pain in the first 5 seconds (the hook), gag by 15 seconds (the laugh), reveal by 30 seconds (the payoff), and the remaining time for one proof shot (the product working, a real result) and the call to action. Keep the total under 60 seconds — a launch film that runs long gets cut by the viewer, not by you. Every shot must earn its seconds; a shot that only looks nice is a shot that steals time from the reveal. - Plan the shoot and the cut (input: full script → output: production plan)
List what the shoot needs: locations, props, people, and the shots that can be faked with editing (a pile of paper can be a still photo with a zoom; a "vanishing" pile is two shots cut together). Shoot the gag and the reveal as matching pairs — same angle, same framing — so the cut between them sells the transformation. Plan the edit for mute-first viewing: on-screen text carries the story, captions carry any dialogue, and the music is chosen to work under a voiceover that may never be heard. Export in the aspect ratios the film will actually run in (vertical for feeds, wide for the site), and watch the final cut once on a phone, on mute, before calling it done.
