Marker-Doodle Brand Studio

Marker-Doodle Brand Studio
When to use
- You are branding a startup, creator business, café, kids' product, or community project and want a warm hand-drawn identity instead of a cold corporate logo
- A brand already uses doodles informally — in slides, packaging, social posts — but they look different every time and you need one consistent system
- You need a full mini brand kit (logo, doodle set, colors, type, do/don't rules) that a non-designer teammate can apply without breaking the style
- Packaging, menus, posters, or social templates need a playful hand-drawn layer that still looks professional at print and at thumbnail size
- An existing doodle-style logo is hard to read, reproduces badly in one color, or falls apart when scaled down to a favicon or receipt
Workflow
- Define the personality (input: business + audience + three adjectives → output: style brief)
Pick three adjectives the brand must feel — e.g. "warm, cheeky, honest" for a neighborhood bakery, or "curious, calm, clever" for a kids' science kit. Every later choice is tested against these three words: a doodle that isn't warm, cheeky, or honest doesn't make the cut. Also name the anti-adjectives — what the brand is not ("not slick, not cute-cutesy, not childish") — because a doodle style drifts toward generic cuteness without a guardrail. - Draw the logo (input: style brief + brand name → output: primary logo + simplified mark)
Design a wordmark in a hand-lettered style — slightly imperfect letterforms, consistent stroke weight, one deliberate quirk (a looped letter, an underlined word, a dot replaced by a doodle). Then build the simplified mark: the same quirk reduced to a single doodle or initial that works at 16 pixels and in one color. If the logo only works in full color at large size, it isn't finished — it needs the simplified version. - Build the doodle library (input: style brief + brand world → output: 12–20 doodles with rules)
Draw 12–20 doodles from the brand's own world: its products, tools, places, and rituals — a whisk and a loaf for the bakery, a magnifying glass and a sprout for the science kit. Rules: one stroke weight family, one level of detail (no photorealistic doodles next to stick figures), every doodle fits in the same bounding box proportions, and each doodle works in ink-only black. Organize them by use: heroes (2–3, for covers and packaging), supporters (for corners and dividers), and accents (tiny stars, arrows, underlines for text). - Set color and type (input: style brief → output: palette + type pairing + texture rules)
Choose a palette of 4–6 colors: one ink (near-black, not pure black — it feels warmer), one paper background, two or three accent colors that look like marker ink (slightly imperfect, saturated but not neon). Pair one hand-lettered display face (logo + headings) with one clean, highly legible sans for body text — the doodles carry the playfulness, so the body type stays calm. Add texture rules: paper grain allowed, marker bleed allowed at large sizes, no drop shadows, no gradients. - Write the usage guidelines (input: logo + doodles + palette + type → output: one-page do/don't sheet)
Produce a single-page guide a teammate can follow: minimum logo size, clear space (at least the height of one doodle on all sides), one-color and reversed versions, the do/don't list (do: pair one hero doodle with lots of white space; don't: stretch the logo, recolor doodles outside the palette, mix in clip-art or emoji, rotate doodles at random angles), and three example lockups (social avatar, packaging label, slide title). End with the file kit: logo in SVG/PNG (color, black, white), doodle library as one SVG sheet plus individual files, palette hex codes.
