Definition Reframe

Definition Reframe

When to use

  • An explainer needs to correct what a word means ("productivity isn't doing more") and a talking head alone won't land it
  • A term has a common meaning and a precise meaning, and the video's whole argument turns on the gap between them
  • A jargon word must be introduced and immediately redefined in the audience's own language
  • A pitch redefines a category ("this isn't a course, it's a...") and the redefinition is the hook

Workflow

  1. Write both definitions (input: your term → output: old + new definition pair)
    State the term in 1–3 words. Write the OLD definition the way the audience already thinks it (≤12 words, in their words, not a strawman). Write the NEW definition the same length (≤12 words). The two must be genuinely different claims, not two wordings of the same idea — if swapping them changes nothing, there is no reframe. Mark the pivot word: the one word in the new definition that carries the shift.
  2. Stage the term (input: term → output: opening frame)
    The term sits large and centered, with the old definition beneath it in smaller, muted type. Hold this frame 1.0–1.5s so the audience reads and agrees with the familiar version first. The term itself never leaves the screen during the whole motion — it is the anchor. Everything else moves around it.
  3. Dissolve the old (input: opening frame → output: mid-transition frame)
    The old definition fades and slides down ~12px over ~0.4s (ease-in), optionally with a strikethrough sweeping across it — one device only, not both fade and strike unless the strike is the point. The term stays put, maybe tightening its letter-spacing a touch (a 1–2% squeeze reads as "bracing for the change"). Do not move the term off-center; the reframe happens to the definition, not the word.
  4. Land the new (input: mid-transition frame → output: closing frame)
    The new definition slides up ~12px from below and fades in over ~0.4s (ease-out), landing exactly where the old one sat. The pivot word gets one emphasis treatment — a color shift, an underline drawing on, or a brief scale pop (1.0 → 1.08 → 1.0) — and nothing else does. Hold the closing frame 1.5–2.5s so the new definition is read, not just flashed. If there is voiceover, the pivot word lands on the stressed syllable of the spoken sentence.
  5. Resolve (input: closing frame → output: finished motion)
    End one of two ways: hold the new definition as the scene's takeaway (cut to the next scene with it still on screen), or shrink the term + new definition into a corner label that persists while the video moves on ("remember: {term} = {new definition}"). Never fade back to the old definition — the reframe is a one-way move.

Definition Reframe — Motion Brief Template

The word stays. The meaning changes. Fill this in before keyframing.

Term: {1–3 words}

Old definition (audience's version, ≤12 words): {old definition} New definition (≤12 words): {new definition} Pivot word: {the one word that carries the shift}

Genuine-difference check: swapping old and new {would / would not} change the claim — because {reason}.

Opening frame

  • Term: large, centered, static for the whole motion
  • Old definition: beneath term, smaller, muted
  • Hold: {1.0–1.5}s — audience reads and agrees first

Transition

  • Old out: slides down {~12}px + fades, {~0.4}s, ease-in
