Chalkboard Infographic

When to use

  • You need to explain a process, timeline, or comparison and a slick corporate chart feels wrong for the audience
  • You're making classroom, workshop, or explainer content and want the "teacher just drew this" feel
  • Your data has a story — before/after, cause/effect, step-by-step — that a plain table buries
  • You want an infographic for social, a slide, or a handout that people actually stop and read
  • Your brand voice is warm, human, and a bit scruffy, and your graphics should match

Workflow

  1. Find the one lesson (input: your topic + facts → output: single takeaway)
A chalkboard teaches one lesson at a time. Distill the infographic to one sentence the viewer should walk away with: "Three habits drive most of the result." Every element that doesn't serve that sentence gets cut. If you have two lessons, you have two infographics.
  2. Pick the chalkboard structure (input: takeaway → output: layout structure)
Match the structure to the lesson: timeline for a sequence, two-column board for a comparison, numbered steps for a process, big-number panel for a single striking fact. Chalkboards work best with 3–7 chunks — fewer feels empty, more feels like a wall of scribbles. Sketch the structure as boxes before drawing anything.
  3. Write the chalk copy (input: facts → output: board copy)
Chalk copy is short, spoken, and a little informal: labels of 1–4 words, explanations of one line each. Numbers get the big chalk treatment — large, circled or underlined. Cut every word that isn't doing work; a chalkboard has no room for filler, and the hand-drawn style makes long paragraphs look like homework.
  4. Draw the board (input: structure + copy → output: infographic)
Dark board background (deep green-black or charcoal), chalk-white main strokes, one or two chalk accent colors (yellow, pink, or blue) for emphasis only. Hand-drawn dividers, arrows, circles, and underlines — slightly imperfect, consistent in weight. Icons are simple line doodles, not clip art. Keep generous spacing: chalk needs air around it or the board looks crowded.
  5. Check readability and truth (input: infographic → output: final graphic)
Read it at the size it will be seen (phone screen, slide, printed handout). Every number must be traceable to a source — chalk style is informal, the facts behind it are not. Check the hierarchy: takeaway first, supporting chunks second, fine print (sources, caveats) small but present at the bottom. If the board can't be understood in 30 seconds, simplify before shipping.
