Workspace App Localize Video

When to use

  • You have one English promo video for your workspace app and need versions for other markets
  • Your app is launching in a new country and the promo still shows English UI, English voiceover, and dollar pricing
  • You need to localize a video on a deadline without re-shooting or re-animating from scratch
  • Your translated video reads awkwardly because the text was translated but the visuals, dates, and examples weren't
  • You want a repeatable process so every future promo ships localized from day one

Workflow

  1. Inventory the localizable surface (input: source video → output: localization list)
Watch the video once and list everything that carries language or culture: on-screen text and UI labels, voiceover script, captions, dates and number formats, currency, example names and companies, colors and gestures, background music. Mark each item as text (replaceable), voice (re-recordable), or visual (needs a new shot or graphic). This list is the whole job — anything not on it ships untranslated.
  2. Adapt, don't just translate (input: localization list + target market → output: adapted script)
Translate the script for meaning and length, not word for word: a line that runs 5 seconds in English may run 7 in another language, which breaks the edit. Adapt examples to the market — local company names, local date formats, local currency, local holidays in calendar shots. Flag jokes, idioms, and hand gestures that don't travel; replace them with a neutral equivalent rather than a literal translation.
  3. Replace the visuals (input: adapted script → output: localized visuals)
Swap on-screen text and UI screenshots for the target-language UI (capture from the localized app build, don't fake it with overlaid text that doesn't match the real product). Rebuild title cards and lower thirds in the target language, keeping the same fonts and layout so the video still looks like itself. If a shot shows something market-inappropriate — a holiday, a gesture, a currency symbol — replace the shot, don't just re-caption it.
  4. Re-record the voice (input: adapted script → output: localized voiceover)
Record the voiceover with a native speaker who matches the original tone (pace, energy, warmth), not just the words. Time the recording against the edit: if a translated line overruns its shot, shorten the line, not the video — cutting frames to fit words makes the edit feel rushed. Mix the new voice at the same level relative to the music as the original.
  5. Review with a native eye (input: localized video → output: publish-ready video)
Have a native speaker of the target market watch the finished video once, checking: does the text read naturally, does the UI match the real localized app, do dates/currency/formats look local, does anything feel off or foreign. Fix what they flag, then do a final technical check — captions synced, no English frames left, audio levels consistent, export in the same specs as the original.
